aHSCT: The reboot of the immune system.

Stem cell therapy as an opportunity.

The aHSCT therapy

aHSCT is a one-off treatment and consists of three phases: the stimulation and removal of the patient’s own blood stem cells, chemotherapy to destroy the body’s own immune cells, and the reintroduction of the patient’s own blood stem cells. It aims to reboot and rebuild the patient’s immune system. It is believed that this treatment can have a long-lasting effect, possibly for many years.

Effectiveness of aHSCT in MS

There are various studies and publications that indicate that aHSCT is an effective therapy for multiple sclerosis and is able to halt the progression of disability and improve symptoms in the long term. However, the data situation is still comparatively sparse and, as is so often the case, the comparability of the figures published in the studies is very limited. With, for example, 46% [Muraro PA et al.] and 78% [HSCT Mexico] probability of stopping disability progression, the range is still very broad.

aHSCT has the highest medical potency and the greatest chance of stopping MS.

Keeping an eye on the risk

Every aHSCT procedure involves risks. It would be too simplistic to describe it as an effective treatment for every patient. After all, the procedure is based on high-dose chemotherapy. Overall, most of the side effects of aHSCT are well manageable and treatable. The number of severe side effects associated with aHSCT has been significantly reduced over the last 20 years thanks to improvements in the procedure. Nevertheless, we are all individuals and react very differently to such severe interventions. And yes, it is true that there have also been fatalities with this form of therapy.

A particularly gentle variant of aHSCT has been used for many years in Mexico at Clinica Ruiz, which specializes in autoimmune diseases. The mortality rate in Mexico is reported at 0.2% in 1,888 patients (as at 04/2025) and severe side effects are largely excluded. In Mexico, the high-dose chemotherapy based on cyclophosphamide is divided into 2×2 days in order to reduce the burden on the body (especially the organs) and to better control possible side effects.

Together against MS

What unites us is the fate of MS. We plucked up all our courage and decided to undergo aHSCT in Mexico.

In order to help other sufferers with our experiences, we have founded a non-profit association with a focus on PPMS. There you will find extensive information on MS and also the opportunity to make donations. In this way, we help other patients who want to opt for aHSCT but cannot afford it. The treatment is not covered by health insurance and costs between 50,000 and 70,000 euros, depending on the country and clinic.

You are welcome to visit our association website: gemeinsamgegenppms.de

Impressions of my aHSCT therapy in Mexico

During my aHSCT therapy in Mexico, as a PPMS sufferer, I filmed various videos about my treatment, but also conversations with other patients and doctors. They were actually intended for my personal WhatsApp group. But they give a good first impression of the topic. That’s why I’ve made them available to everyone on YouTube.
